Starting Feb 1st, only a small bag (max 45x36x20cm) will be allowed in the cabin on easyJet flights.
Only customers who have booked an Up front or Extra legroom seat will be able to bring a larger suitcase (max 56x45x25cm) in the cabin.

A completely bonkers move, and one which may drive passengers to BA. I am now going to positively avoid Easyjet until this policy is reversed, and I hope others boycott them too. Crazy.

This will drive me away from EZ. I normally use them as an alternative to other LCCs such as Transavia. EZ USP was the ability to buy Speedy + 2 bags, with no weight restrictions. Now there is no benefit to EZ.

BA must be watching this development, let us hope they do not follow suit.

    Question to Moderator

What is happening here please? When I posted 5 minutes ago (19.48) my post appeared. I needed to edit the post to correct a spelling typo and now the post is hidden. On my screen it says there are 7 posts, the original and 6 replies … but it will only show “Viewing 5 posts – 1 through 5 (of 5 total)”

Cedric – thanks for raising this point: this has happened to me a couple of times recently.

I don’t think passengers will care. Look how Ryan Air treats its passengers, even charging ridiculous amounts for printing boarding cards at check in. Pre pandemic this never affected them. perhaps Easy realise, also like BA, they can do what they want, passengers will still fly.

I am waiting for the day when these airlines will start charging for toilet uses!

In this way they can have only one toilet due to less uses and pack some extra seat!

I am trying after an overnight rest to repost my comment of yesterday. My apologies to anyone who managed to read it first time before BT decided to hide it!

Of course this move by EasyJet will be unpopular. But if one thinks at all about overhead locker space, several things cannot be denied.
    – It is in short supply, with demand for it regularly exceeding capacity
    – It is a major advantage for time-pressured travellers as it avoids the need to use baggage reclaim (which is why it is so popular)
    – It is widely abused by people trying to stuff far more than their allowance in it
    – It slows down both boarding and disembarkation badly
    – It is a constant source of conflict and frustration both between passengers (later boarders finding no space within several rows of their seat), and between passengers and gate staff (as people try to persuade gate staff that yes of course they should be allowed to take their oversized wheely-suitcase, and a suit bag, and a laptop, and some duty free into the cabin with them)

Nobody likes to be asked to pay for something which has up to now been free but charging properly for this useful and scarce resource would solve all these problems, be fairer to all and also raise money. Why should EasyJet not do this? What, really, is the complaint except that of “I don’t like paying for something I have enjoyed for free up to now”?

Personally I would like Easyjet to go further and have hold baggage free, while cabin baggage above one small thing that can go under the seat in front was charged. That would go even further to charging appropriately for the different ways of taking luggage with you, reward those willing to help the pressure on the cabin space, and completely solve all the current issues with overhead lockers.

But I expect that if this thread gets 100 posts, this will still be the only one not shouting angrily at Easyjet.

@Cedric_Statherby ————- Actually in many ways I agree with you.

But let’s go back say 15-20 years, and most off us (probably) put the case in the hold, I know I did in those days.
Then we waited by the carousel or in the baggage hall (having a cigarette) and eventually collected our bag.
It was the airlines who started this ‘conflict’.
They started to separate fares with no baggage and with a quite ridiculous extra amount for an added case.
All Airline websites then urged us 2 or 3 times during booking ‘Are you sure you do not need luggage space? We are 50% cheaper than at the airport’ blah blah blah
So we all got wise to this, acquired ourselves a trolleybag and very rarely used or needed the extra hold luggage option.
The onus then came on the poor cabin crew to find space for 180 trolleybags
Now the airlines (arise Easyjet) want to screw us again, as they have lost the previous battle to the passenger (however good and improved their ‘turn-around’ times were at the gate).

However I do agree with you that Mr ‘DYKWIA’ is a nuisance sometimes, but Mr and Mrs ‘Once a Year Holidaymaker’ with their 2 kids more so.
Worst of all though are pax down in the GULF where the annual or bi annual labourers try to take TVs and ‘Ghetto Blasters’ inside the cabin.
Residents from the Horn of Africa also have a strange idea of what constitutes cabin baggage, ladies with colourful attire from a little further south too.
Maybe that is why LCC carriers (on a par with EZY etc) do not really exist in the Middle East.

Breaking News. Tesco will now charge £5 to use a shopping trolley, but you can use the hand basket for free. Yes this is unlikely, but the point is a charge will drive some people away. BA were oft compared to a LCC, now there is clear blue water between them and Lcc’s. With lounge access, and the FF benefits, I will be making BA my first choice again, and will be cashing in disrupted flights, not taking vouchers off them.

let’s not forget that the 1 pound charge to use a baggage trolley at Luton is non-refundable.

I did a lot of flying with LCCs soon after they started in the 1990s.

Back then there were none of these charges. Go would allow free seat selection at the airport (online seat selection was unavailable at that time).

Over the years it’s all down to having the lowest headline price. That applies to both conventional airlines and LCCs.
